Company scoops £5,000 and Harborne based co-founder Jordan Grayson will brunch with Richard Branson

Project Jackfruit, an online business which produces homemade, ethically-sourced vegan and savoury cooking sauces, has been crowned the Birmingham winner of the Virgin Media Business Voom Pitch competition. Co-founders Jordan Grayson and Abi Robertson, both 23 and based in Harborne, Birmingham, collect £5,000 towards their business. Jordan will also get to meet Richard Branson to discuss his business idea over brunch later in a few weeks’ time.

Six companies* from Birmingham pitched as part of the Voom Tour to a panel of three judges, after being whittled down from thousands of online entries.

Project Jackfruit impressed the judges with its clear business proposition, impressive sales and innovative concept, which turns the highly nutritious, but the relatively unknown humble jackfruit into four tasty cooking sauces – all of which are sustainably and ethically sourced and 100% vegan.

Jordan and Abi came up with the idea for Project Jackfruit whilst at University, looking for cheaper and healthier dinner alternatives to tasty and filling dishes like pulled-pork. After discovering the potential of jackfruit whilst shopping for ingredients in a local Indian corner shop, they started experimenting with flavours and found that if they cooked young jackfruit the resulting texture was very similar to pulled meat and incredibly tasty. Jordan and Abi decided they were onto a winning concept and decided to quit their jobs and bring jackfruit to the masses.

Following the win, Jordan commented: “I thoroughly enjoyed pitching at the Voom competition and am so surprised and excited that we won – the support from the crowd was enthralling. It’s such a great platform to give young businesses like ours the kick-start they need to jump to the next level and fulfil our potential. We’re already in talks with a major UK food retailer, so this investment will help us find a suitable manufacturer in India, where the jackfruit grows, so we can upscale production and it will also fund our marketing activity.”

The Voom Tour is the first time that Voom Pitch, the UK and Ireland’s biggest business pitching competition, has hit the road in search of the best new business ideas. It’s designed to help the brightest and the best companies to perfect their pitching ahead of the national competition in 2018. In addition, the Voom Bus offers free and exclusive 1-on-1s with leading experts such as LinkedIn, Crowdfunder, Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAEW) and JCDecaux.

Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Group Founder, said: “The Voom Tour is seeking out brilliant entrepreneurs and ideas to help break down the barriers to business success. The aim is to help them put aside their fears and take the next steps on what could be the most significant journey of their business life. I’m looking forward to meeting the winner of the Birmingham Voom Pitch.”

The Voom Tour is officially live and travelling to communities across the UK and Ireland, with its next stop on 5th October. For more information on the Voom Tour, and details on how to register to pitch a great business idea, please visit
