VIRGIN MEDIA BUSINESS AND THE HAMPSHIRE AND ISLE OF WIGHT PARTNERSHIP SIGN 25M CONTRACT EXTENSION
Over 2,000 sites across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight now benefit from improved connectivity thanks to continued development and collaboration between all parties
Virgin Media Business has further cemented its long-standing relationship with the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Partnership (HIOWP), with a contract extension that will see the telco power the Public Service Network (PSN) for a further four years.
The PSN contract extension follows a £90million six year framework contract known as HPSN2 (Hampshire Public Service Network 2), the first PSN compliant framework in the UK. The framework currently connects over 2,000 sites across the county including over 600 schools and delivers secure and reliable connectivity to thousands of public sector staff.
Hampshire County Council is the lead authority for HPSN2, which offers savings of over £1m per annum for the authority alone, and is available to any public sector organisation. The network has also provided a leading edge solution for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service who are now able to mobilise resources more quickly. With the use of portable touch-screen devices, firefighters can find the closest fire hydrants and assess any risks in the area, while en-route to an emergency.
HPSN2 also allows greater collaboration between the regions’ public service providers so information can be shared easily between local authorities, health providers and emergency services.
Greater resilience and security has meant thousands of Hampshire school children have access to a fully inclusive curriculum that is delivered in a safe and secure environment. Over 97% of Hampshire schools are now connected to the network, and 80% of all public sector services.
As well as allowing the partnership to continue without service disruption and avoiding any additional procurement costs, the contract provides more long term benefits, including; providing creative solutions to connectivity problems, and continued development to ensure partners across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight remain at the forefront of digital innovation.
Gerry Arthurs, Director, Public Sector, Virgin Media Business says, “It’s important the public sector ensure they have the right technology and infrastructure in place to fulfil their needs now and into the future.
“Improving services in the two counties is having a direct effect on how people are living their lives and we’re delighted to continue to work the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Partnership to achieve true connectivity for their citizens.”
Jane Stedman, Support, Quality and Security Manager at Hampshire County Council said: “Now more than ever, we need to ensure that we make the best use of the technology available to reduce costs and sustain quality services. Working in partnership with Virgin Media Business, we will continue to meet future challenges for improving services, while maximising efficiencies and savings.”
The HIOWP was set up in 2008 to allow public sector bodies in the two counties to run joint IT procurements and projects. The partnership comprises 19 organisations, including 15 local authorities from across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, health partners, voluntary sector partners, and the New Forest National Park Authority.
HPSN2 covers all aspects of telecommunications including wide area networking (WAN), fixed and mobile telephony, internet services, local area networking (LAN) and video conferencing.
“Now more than ever, we need to ensure that we make the best use of the technology available to reduce costs and sustain quality services. Working in partnership with Virgin Media Business, we will continue to meet future challenges for improving services, while maximising efficiencies and savings.”
