Looking back: 2011 in review

telemedicine2011 was a very busy year for us at Virgin Media Business. With some of our biggest deals and product launches ever all taking place there has rarely been a quiet moment! Before 2012 is fully underway, I thought I’d take a quick look at some of the exciting stuff we’ve been up to in 2011.

Investing in the future of education

At the start of the year we started working with London Grid for Learning to give London schools access to innovative e-learning products and IT tools at a price they can afford.

Securing the Public Services Network (PSN)

In April we became the first provider to receive the interim NGN 224 security accreditation. This meant that we could offer PSN accredited services to the public sector. We gained full accreditation in August.

Laying the foundations for 4G

Just a few months ago, we announced a ground breaking deal with MBNL. The deal will see us build 14 regional aggregation networks across the UK using Synchronous Ethernet (SynchE) technology.  This investment in mobile backhaul will give Everything Everywhere and Three’s customers an unrivalled mobile experience and reap the true potential of existing 3G services.

Preventing stroke deaths in Lancashire and Cumbria

One of our most exciting projects this year has been with Lancashire and Cumbria NHS. We’re making it possible for specialist doctors to remotely diagnose stroke victims via video link. This will speed up treatment times considerably and as a result is expected to save at least 24 lives per year.

Supporting Silicon Roundabout

Tech City is a massive initiative by the government to boost technology entrepreneurship and investment in the UK, and we’re playing a key role. We’re giving start-up incubator THECUBE access to a 1Gb/s dedicated internet connection so that its members can benefit from business-grade high-bandwidth connectivity on flexible commercial terms.

Setting IT free

We continued our campaign to set businesses free from IT constraints with our entry into the cloud market and the launch of our Virtual Private Data Centre. With a promise of simple, jargon-free advice, and easy-to-use technology, we’re determined to help more businesses benefit from cloud technologies.
