Because you shouldn’t have to choose between security and performance.
Clearly any cloud computing deployment or shared service needs a solid foundation on a secure high performing network. Here at Virgin Media Business we’ve already built a great reputation for enabling next-generation technology in the public sector.
We’re already providing fully accredited and secure network services to government, helping thousands of public sector staff connect with one another and work more effectively while also getting more for your money.
Data security in the cloud
If you’re handling public sector data, you need to be sure that it’s held and transported securely. With the right network and audit procedures, cloud computing can actually be more secure than an on-site data centre.
Virgin Media Business is one of only two telecommunications providers to achieve Public Services Network (PSN) accreditation and we've also been approved to provide cloud services under the G-Cloud framework initiative.
Our network services meet CAS(T) NGN impact level 224 criteria. We offer enterprise-level SLAs on every element of our network, so responsibilities are always clear and consistently documented.
In plain language, that means we’re already trusted by 1,600 public sector organisations, including 250 local councils covering 30,000 sites. 28 of London’s 32 boroughs have Virgin Media Business services at the heart of their communications platform, and we supply over 60% of the UK’s health and emergency services. Working this close with Public Sector organisations across the board means we understand many of the challenges you face and how to address them with our connectivity, datacentre and cloud services.

Your questions answered

So what are we doing in the cloud space?

Firstly we have just launched our first truly cloud service - Virtual Private Data Centre.
With a simple online portal and connections over a virtual private network or the public internet, you can have the computing power, network, storage and security services you need up and running in hours where an in house option typically takes many weeks.
But that’s not all, through our partnerships we have the ability to offer government specific services from hosting to private cloud meeting the highest standards and accreditations. And the ability to set up and manage PSN frameworks.

Is cloud computing secure enough for public sector data?

Our standard VPDC product infrastructure resides in the UK within a Savvis data centre designed and built to attain Tier III - IV classification. It is ISO27001 and SAS70 accredited. But we also recognise that public sector often need higher security solutions to IL2/3 for sensitive data and through our partnership approach we can design solutions that meet these standards while keeping the core benefits of our standard VPDC product. Our consultants will happily access your needs and find the right solution.
With the right network and data centre, cloud computing can even be more secure than on-site servers.
Virgin Media Business has taken the lead in bringing cost-effective secure connectivity to Britain’s public sector organisations. We’re proud to have achieved Public Services Network accreditation and our network and data centres meet strict security and quality control standards.

Where will my data be stored?

Your data is kept in a secure, resilient data centre in the UK. All our sites meet or exceed industry standard security requirements as well as criteria outlined by the Uptime Institute, and are regularly audited. We even store fuel on site for our backup generators.
