Virgin Media Business and CRYPTOCard partner to deliver two-factor authentication to secure remote access
Kingston Primary Care Trust (PCT) is working with Virgin Media Business and CRYPTOCard to offer staff secure remote access to its central clinical database. Initially being rolled out to 450 users, the provision of secure access to content and applications will enable extended opening hours across GP surgeries, and is in line with the Out-of-Hours services requirement within the new GP contract.
Using a fibre optic network from Virgin Media Business, Kingston PCT will start offering staff remote access to the central database via broadband in the next month. All users requiring access to the central systems from remote locations will be asked to enter a secure one-time password provided by a special token and validated by the MAS service from CRYPTOCard.
“When looking at the need to provide remote access and ultimately compliance with the new GP contract, it was clear that two-factor authentication was essential – and the solution chosen had to be robust, flexible and easy to use,” said Ed Montgomery, Head of ICT, Kingston PCT. “Virgin Media Business provided the network to support the MAS cloud-based service requiring minimal management or overhead, making it a compelling solution and the perfect fit for our requirements.”
MAS is a managed authentication service that leverages cloud-based security technologies to offer unrivalled availability and service levels. It uses utility model pricing to ensure affordability and is easily integrated within existing infrastructures.
“In the health service, making sure that only the right people have access to the right information is absolutely crucial. Being able to securely access medical data whilst on the move is a fantastic example of how Primary Care Trusts can enable greater collaboration across various locations and offer a superior level of service to their local residents,” said David Astley, head of health and emergency services at Virgin Media Business.
“Too frequently remote access to data is compromised by inadequate user identification solutions that are neither robust enough nor convenient to use. Kingston PCT is now able to offer 450 employees the highest level of secure access within a flexible and easy to use solution,” said Neil Hollister, President and CEO, CRYPTOCard. “MAS is unique in that it allows organisations to use two-factor authentication but does not require them to install equipment or manage the solution on a day-to-day basis. For Kingston, the ability to wrap this up into an overall networking deal with Virgin Media Business made procurement even easier.”
