Custodian, a Kent-based data centre venture spun out of one of the UK’s largest standalone TV studios, is taking on the data centre storage market with high speed fibre network from ntl:Telewest Business, part of the Virgin Media Group. This will enable Custodian to offer companies affordable data centre space coupled with swift access to business critical data.
Based 30 miles outside central London, Custodian’s 150,000 square feet (sq ft) technical facility has been used to broadcast programmes as diverse as The Basil Brush Show and the Eurovision Song Contest. After many years experience of safely storing media on-site and broadcasting uninterrupted live programmes to millions of viewers, Custodian was ideally placed to diversify into the data centre market. With data underpinning business operations at all levels, organisations expect instant access to their information and as such Custodian knew that a robust and reliable communications infrastructure would be key to its success.
“These are exciting times for data centres based outside the M25. Fibre-optic networks are making distance less and less relevant, meaning that London-based companies have more choice when it comes to storing their data,” said Leonard Kay, Custodian’s business development manager. “We diversified after realising that we had the capacity and the expertise to shake up the data centre market.”
“Resilient communications is a vital part of our offering. Customers want to know that they can access their information when they need it, without experiencing delay. ntl:Telewest Business worked with us to understand our business strategy and goals in order to put in place the right infrastructure that enables us to differentiate ourselves in the market,” he said.
The new data centre replaces an onsite facility originally used to store footage from TV programmes. It is among the most modern in the UK, with racks offering up to 64 Amps of power and an advanced cooling system. The fibre network provided by ntl:Telewest Business allows companies leasing space in the data centre to access servers using a range of high-speed services, including Ethernet and Managed Internet connectivity. This means that customers can use the type of connection that works best with their own networks.
“Businesses in many sectors may be struggling in the recession and are looking to reduce operating costs,” said Gerry Arthurs, head of business markets for ntl:Telewest Business in the south east. “The push to automate, outsource and do more business online means that data centres are doing a roaring trade. ntl:Telewest Business’ advanced Next Generation Network allows companies in the South East to enjoy excellent access speeds so businesses in the region can compete against competitors nation-wide.”
